Today’s first proclamation introduces the gospel ideally. The Hebrews enter a land of snakes that are biting them even to death. Moses, in prayer, decides to make a serpent of bronze, and fix it to a pole..Anyone bitten could gaze upon it with faith, and live. This becomes the caduceus visible often today in physicians’ offices. More importantly, this pole previewed the healing cross of Christ. If anyone reflects deeply on the crucified, he/she will enjoy spiritual life. Such salvation will not spring from some magical atonement, but from living the life of Christ, our exemplar and mentor. Thus, the cross feeds our being healed and saved from the snakes of our own selfishness, addictions, and greed.
