Do we seek the stature of being wealthy, religious, or powerful? Be aware! Jesus condemns such attitudes in today’s gospel. He describes a poor widow who contributes a penny to the temple while rich folk give massive amounts. Astoundingly, Jesus says she gave more. She had actually given less, but she gave from her heart-felt need, and that is what Jesus primarily values. I recall a virtuous lady who was honored by her university at a graduation exercise. She had arranged before-hand to donate her award to the AT RISK HAITIAN CHILDREN PROGRAM, and never mentioned it in her address. She would receive the award alright, but it would carry eternal value. Our reward for following Christ remains the privilege of living his life forever.
