The battle is on, in and among all of us. Am I free or shackled by my own excesses? Do I seek to serve or overpower; feed or ignore the starving? As Christians, we wage these wars day day, and will, until we breathe our last. Today’s gospel depicts such a battle as waged by our hero, Jesus of Nazareth. He encounters a man who was ill, and believed that unclean spirits controlled him, and so insulted Jesus. Jesus silenced his hostility with the authority and power of love. Thus, Jesus shows us how to defeat our real enemies, those of the spirit. How amazing that the compassion of Jesus is indestructible! Even more amazing that by wieldinging his power, we also embody his courage to crush the forces of evil.
