Matthew composes a magnificent story of 3 magi who wander through the desert to Bethlehem in search of “the new-born king of the Jews”. They represent each of us who are journeying through our own deserts seeking Christ. The magi bring 3 precious gifts: gold fit for a king and incense reminding us of priesthood. Therefore, they hail the baby as future king and priest. Finally, they offer myrrh an aromatic gum used for embalming the dead. Matthew is artfully stating he will accomplish this by his death. Matthew’s Jesus is therefore calling us to to grow in kingliness and priesthood, and achieve it by our own death to apathy and to live our life in Christ. Ah! But, brother and sister travelers, that takes courage.
