Often, we are tempted, become discouraged, and faIl This reminds one of the 40 years of desert during which the Hebrews suffered the terrors of desolation with only the visionary hope of a vague promised land. However, they were also a people of faith. In today’s gospel, Jesus endures his 40 days in faith and hope; only he does not fail. He overcomes the threats of self and power-seeking. Now, it’s our turn to struggle with self; except that, because of Jesus, we know we can also prevail. Actually, the 40 days symbolize all our days, for we are constantly challenged. Each of us can become this Lent a new person, a Christ, who has endured and risen above the self-serving tentacles of desert-living.
