Most of us consider today’s gospel story literally: that Jesus multiplied 5 loaves from nothing, and fed 5000 people with them. If Jesus were human (and he was), he wasn’t able to do that. If divine, (and he was), he loved to the ultimate, and he did. This sign, as John called it, signifies the limitless love of Jesus for all of us. It exceeds the purest human love we can imagine: it is divine love. Jesus calls us to such devotion to each other: to overcome differences in gender, sexual persuasion, religion, race, nation. Whatever our differences, he calls us to become one and grow together in surpassing forgiveness, peace, and compassion. In a word, Jesus feeds us with his bread, his love, himself.
