“He who has the gold, rules” is not the golden rule; nor for Christians, is “You shall love your neighbor as yourself”. Rather, our Lord commands us, “Love one another as I have loved you”. Thus, Jesus orders us to love, as he does, each person among our families, friends, and, yes, those who dislike us. Further, our love must become ever deeper. Still, love does not mean allowing others to abuse us. We love appropriately for each relationship. However, vengeance, hate, envy, violence etc. are never appropriate. Why must we love? Because Jesus insists that God is love, and calls us to union with God. God is calling each of us to forgive, sacrifice, and support each other ever more fully.
