The Sadducees of today’s gospel did not believe in resurrection. They therefore challenged Jesus with an absurd story of seven brothers who married the same woman after the death of his predecessor. They ask, “At resurrection, whose wife will she be”? Jesus uses their silliness to explain that in resurrection, their relationship to God will supersede mere human relationships. God’s love will absorb our human love. God will love us directly insofar as we have loved, and this love experience will breathe of ecstatic embrace. Will there be love of neighbor? Certainly; but it will exist within the divine communing. Eternity becomes an ever deepening mutual love affair with love itself (God). Our name for this is heaven; to deprive oneself of this ecstasy is hell
