Fear is a useful emotion helping us to avoid danger and overcome challenges, but psychologists say excessive fear constitutes the most common dimension of all mental disease. Such fear proceeds, some say, from the “wombing experience” . Nine months of gentle serenity nurtures immense growth until the sudden intrusive upheaval of light, touch, and sound. Could this trauma form the base of the troublesome fears we all suffer in life that lead to the ultimate fear of death.
Jesus proclaims in today’s gospel, “Don’t fear those who kill the body, but can’t kill the soul.” Whether illness, poverty, pandemic, racism, or whatever, do not fear, for God calls us in daily resurrection to his bosom, safe. sound, and secure now and forever
