What an amazing symbolic story in today’s gospel! Jesus journeys to a foreign country where he encounters a wreck of a human being. This man is a gentile, possessed by multiple demons, without clothing or home (symbolizing total poverty) and living amidst the graves (symbolizing death). He was often shackled to control his savage behavior. In a word, he was a depraved degenerate. Then, the commanding presence of Jesus brings understanding, compassion, and hope to his crushed brother. In startling admiration, the man overcomes his desperation, and his so called evil spirits are destroyed appropriately in nearby swine. The man is now free to become a disciple at the feet of Jesus. He has journeyed from spiritual depths to divine heights. Does this magnificent story carry meaning for us?
