Many Christians attend Eucharist today to receive palms. They then place the palms prominently in their homes, but few understand the hallowed meaning of the palms, and thus their lives never change. We wave our palms, and shout, “Hosanna”. This represents dynamic liturgy, but what does it mean? The original Christian significance pictures Jesus entering Jerusalem as the crowds scream for his delivering them from Roman oppression. Today however, we plead for deliverance from violence, injustice, and hostility. We still need Christ, our savior, and the palms symbolize our cry. We must remember that Christ dwells not on a road leading to Jerusalem but in our hearts. We, with Christ in us, are the saviors, and we save by living lives of peace and compassion. Thus, the meaning of the palms.
