Being a good shepherd presents an important recurring biblical theme. Ezekiel proclaims: “Woe to the shepherds of Israel who have been pasturing themselves….Thus says the Lord God, ‘I swear I am coming against these shepherds’. ” That’s enough to make one tremble. However, if one uses his/her pastoral role for self-seeking, one certainly sins grievously. Today’s gospel contrasts Jesus as the good shepherd laying down his life selflessly for his sheep. We are those sheep, but Jesus calls us also to be shepherds, guiding each other along the way to greater love and compassion. Just imagine each of us resolving to follow Christ on our pastoral journey. Christ would have transformed our lives, and we would have helped transform the world.
