“I’ll do the dishes!” “I’ll shovel the snow!” How often I have promised action, but t’was only words. Jesus, in today’s gospel, illustrates the power of action over mere words. He then accuses his religious superiors of only words while praising sinners who seek righteousness. Jesus is speaking to religious types. However, he is also addressing his disciples, the baptized. He calls all of us not just to pray and attend liturgy but to live our lives in Christ and draw others to fulfillment: to him. Half-empty churches are not acceptable. Christly living becomes our life goal. Paul reiterates this in our second proclamation: “Do nothing out of selfishness or vainglory….That you may be blameless and innocent children of God without blemish.”
