Many of us could tell stories proving a fortunate child had a wondrous mother. However, I never realized it until grown, and realized her profound sacrifices for her unknowing son. Now, an older man, I understand the divine love she showered upon me. Motherhood describes warmth, caring, and self-oblation. Surely, this denotes Abba, our God of love. I pray you had such a mother, but either way, we must admit God is motherly. What a shame that religious patriarchy has often deprived us of relating to God as mother. Abba, the name Jesus called God, means in its root mommy or daddy, but males have translated it as masculine only. From this mother’s day, may we live and pray in the presence of Abba: mommy or daddy.
