Recently, I saw a picture of myself as a teenager (possibly from the 19th century). My changes were nearly beyond belief: no deeply etched facial lines, nor bulging beneath the eyes, and I actually had hair. However different, I still recognized myself. Could physical transforming symbolize in reverse our spiritual transfiguration? That even as we diminish physically, Christ is calling us to grow in wisdom, forgiveness, and acceptance. Just as white signifies victory biblically, so, as the years pass, we whiten spiritually, This obviously has nothing to do with skin color, but does reflect our maturing in Christ, our transfiguring beyond knowledge, laws, and earthen cares. Could Christ be calling us in this moment to empowering transfiguration: to eternal victory?
