Just as we stop, look, and listen at rail crossings for the all-important train, so Jesus tells us today to give our prime attention to God’s word. Church is vital; sacraments helpful; but Jesus exclaims today that we must understand his word, take it to heart, and persevere in its meaning. Jesus is ordering us to read , study, and embrace its life-message.. This is not an option or preference, but an essential to Christian living. “Anyone with ears, listen!” This also means we must embrace not our meaning but the author’s. Scripture scholars such as Spong, Borg, and Crossan have courageously searched these meanings, and yet their names are relatively unknown. Hear today’s parable of the sower. Become good ground, and yield amazing fruit.
