What is Pentecost? Actually, Israel celebrated at Pentecost God’s giving them the law on Mt. Sinai. However, the celebration of the law evolved among Christians into God’s giving not the law but himself: love. Luke uses 3 symbols in today’s first proclamation to describe divine love. The wind (recall Genesis 1:2) blowing through the disciples’ abode speaks of a titanic creation in Christ of a new people committed not to law but to love. Luke then describes tongues of fire incinerating these disciples. This marks the intense passion of this love even unto death. Finally, people from throughout the world understand the Aramaic language of the disciples, for God loves all people, and sends us to love his beloved. We are the wind; we are the fire; and we embrace all children of God.
