Priests and Levites ask John that same question in today’s gospel. I recall a teacher once asking that question of me. I responded, “I am Norm!”. She critiqued, “No, that’s your name”. Then I answered, I am a deacon” to which she said, “No, that’s your calling; who are you?” Similarly, John admitted honestly that he was not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor a prophet: he was merely the voice of one crying in the desert: “Make straight the way of the Lord”. Jesus is calling us to the same witness. Our voice must express our values: to make straight the way of the Lord by our living “in Christ”. We surely reside today in a spiritual desert; his words are in desperate need; and we echo John’s voice.
