Epiphany means the manifestation of God. But notice Matthew’s story describes not God’s royal throne nor palace but a “house” in which a mother, father, and child reside. God is already sending a message: “I prefer simplicity, authenticity, and loving caress”. God redefines greatness and success in tender terms. We have had it all wrong: God has power but it’s the power of love not of force or intervention. And this love embraces all Judeans (shepherds) and gentiles (magi). These latter brought physical gifts to Jesus; whereas, God brings us spiritual bounty so that we, with Jesus, can manifest divine innocence and love through our own presence. Yes, it’s true: wise men and women spend their lives following their star to find Jesus so they can manifest him by serving each other.
