Today’s gospel pictures Mary, sister of Martha and Lazarus, as a sensitive woman who has saved very expensive perfume to anoint Jesus. Judas the treasurer objects, “This money could be given to the poor”. Jesus rebukes him, ” You always have the poor but not me”. What does Jesus mean? They can always practice charity, but intimacy with Jesus will soon end. We must remember the heart of Christianity beats in unison with Christ. Charity flows from him not vice-versa. We are not simple caregivers, but desperate lovers of Christ who live at his feet. We are Marys who live and die for him, and we are Marthas who because of him work and give to all whom we touch.
