Today’s gospel expresses the heart of Jesus’ bread of life discourse. He speaks explicitly of his real presence in bread and wine. However, he is surely not referring to his mere physical presence: elbows, muscles, and arteries. He speaks of the spiritual risen Christ: understanding, wisdom, and compassion. He, the risen Christ, seeks to live really and spiritually in each of us. Indeed, to realize this becomes the life goal of every Christian: really every person. This and nothing else determines our success as a human being. Christianity is the sole religion that asks us not merely to worship but to identify with our founder. And to the degree we fulfill this in our earthly life, determines the Christliness of our eternal heavenly life.
