“We must never talk about religion and politics”, claim many people. Jesus, however, speaks of these “bugaboos” especially in today’s gospel. The Pharisees and Herodians (strange bedfellows) admit Jesus tells the truth, but still try to”trip him up” in that famed encounter wherein Jesus concludes, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.” Jesus agrees there are material issues under governmental control, but God has spiritual and moral jurisdiction over all things. Therefore, civic authority ought to address its’ official decisions in the spirit of justice and compassion. And, we should elect our political leaders based on 2 principles: their competence and their ultimate goodness and truth which is Christ.
