We hear so much today of American exceptionalism and what it means to be an American. Many even say that the U. S. is the world’s greatest nation. If Jesus walked physically among us, he would not agree. He never spoke of the supremacy of Israel, nor of their being the “Chosen people”. Rather, he mentioned the “Good Samaritan”, and “that all may be one”. He embraced all people, even the occupying Romans. In today’s gospel, he sends out his missionaries to whoever will receive them. Today, he dispatches us to bring to him whoever receives us. “Take no provisions: that is, let not your income nor health be your priority”. Rather, burn passionately with your only priority: to fill all you touch with the wisdom and compassion of Christ.
